Tantra for Erotic Empowerment starts with a powerful promise:  The practice of Tantra can bring profound benefits both to your sexual life and to your life in general.

Mark A. Michaels and Patricia Johnson, a male/female couple who have studied Tantra together for the past nine years, have conducted online courses in the subject since 2001.  Their success in teaching lead them to publish Tantra for Erotic Empowerment.

Michaels and Johnson point out that most Tantric texts refer to heterosexual relationships between two people.  However, they encourage members of any genders and orientations to adapt the exercises for their own use, and they note that classical Indian erotic art often portrays group and same-sex couplings.

The authors stress that Tantra is not a “set of techniques for better sex.”  Instead, it is an approach that acknowledges the power inherent in sexual energy, a power which can transform a life (or a relationship) if followed.  There is no end goal for the practice of Tantra.  Practitioners don’t aim for bigger orgasms, more pleasure or a greater number of partners. Instead, Tantra serves as a day-to-day practice which over time will bring a deepening of both self-knowledge and the ability to connect with a partner.

Fourteen chapters called dalas (the Sanskrit for petals) form the basis of Michaels’ and Johnson’s book.  Each dala contains information, questions and exercises designed to bring the reader into a deeper knowledge of Tantric practices.  The authors suggest that the dalas should be approached slowly — at least a week per chapter — for the most substantial benefits.

Journaling is strongly encouraged, both for self-knowledge and for a better understanding of future dalas.  Michaels and Johnson provide ample writing prompts and plentiful opportunities to incorporate the writing into your Tantric practice.

The authors encourage both members of a couple to be willing participants in the sexual aspects of tantra study.  However, they note that Tantric study can have great benefits for individuals as well, and when one member of a couple studies alone, there are often results for both partners.

Those looking for a quick fix for their sexual issues or easy advice on how to spice up a relationship will not find what they’re looking for in Tantra for Erotic Empowerment.  Folks interested in a holistic method of reevaluating their spiritual and sexual practices will enjoy the most benefit from this book.
