Oh goodness, I never saw that comment, but I hope I didn't set someone off... a lot of women I talk to have different "deadlines" they set for themselves, for all different reasons... it's a very personal decision. I just wanted everyone to know that, just because I've set my own personal deadline at 35, doesn't mean I have anything wrong with women over that age having babies. I mean, 35 is the age that they start doing some additional testing, just to make sure everything's OK, but as the responder above said, the risks are still very low. And, things can go wrong with any pregnancy at any age... my babies almost didn't make it and wouldn't be here today without medical intervention, all because of a semi-rare defect in the placenta that was as random as my conceiving of identical twins was.... and I was at the ripe old age of 29 when I got pregnant :-p You just never know for sure... but if you're healthy, and want to have another baby, go for it! It's not like once you celebrate your 35th birthday, you go straight from being a young, nubile, fertile woman to having your uterus crumble into dust :-p It's just a ridiculous notion...

Anyway, sorry if I caused this to become a negative thread, in any way!!

Sorry Eddie, I did delete that rather ridiculous comment you were responding to. For anyone else reading, it was a comment about how women over 35 shouldn't reproduce because we'll have retarded babies. That was in a nutshell, although I think I posted it about as articulately as that particular commenter did. :)

Oh, for fuck's sake.

Risk of Down syndrome is still less than 1% at maternal age 40, and about 3% at 45.

In contrast:
"Nearly one-half of mistimed pregnancies (45 percent) occurring to women under 20 years of age were reported as 'more than 5 years too soon' compared with 8 percent of mistimed pregnancies to women 30–44 years of age."*

And:
"nearly two-thirds of births to women younger than age 20 were paid for by Medicaid or other government assistance, compared with 14 percent of births to women 30-44 years of age."*

Younger mothers may have an advantage in physical fecundity, but I'd rather see older parents who really want a child and have the resources to provide good care.

I'd be interested, though, in any studies that might explain SOCIAL retardation.

Happy birthday to you! (I'd sing it if I could here) You are such a sexy, intelligent, lovely lady. I enjoy reading your personal comments and thoughts, as much if not more than the info on your site.

Look me up if you're ever coming through Grants Pass OR. I'm a 54 yr old who admires you and your work. And yes, the older you get the more it's just not a big deal...and sex does get better with experience and confidence.

Happy Birthday Jane! Dave just turned 38 himself... unfortunately, no birthday sex because we were on vacation with the twins in Cleveland at the time... poor Dave! :-p And I can feel for you on the self-imposed baby deadline... I've given myself until 35 to have another one (if I'm going to have another one), so I also only have a couple of years left to figure that out :-p
